Suction-based therapy rooted in Ayurveda's Raktamokshana tradition, used to ease muscular pain, improve circulation, and support the body's natural detox process. Available at 6 clinics across Delhi NCR & Gurugram.
Cupping has become popular worldwide in recent years, but in Ayurveda it has ancient roots — related to Raktamokshana, one of the five core Panchakarma therapies. At Ayurnava, cupping is practiced by trained therapists using controlled suction to relieve muscular tension and support circulation, not as a quick fix but as part of a considered treatment approach.
Cupping therapy uses specially designed cups placed on the skin to create suction, drawing blood flow toward the surface and helping release muscular tension. Ayurveda practices both dry cupping (suction only) and, in select cases, wet cupping (with controlled micro-incisions, corresponding to classical Raktamokshana) — the right approach is chosen based on your condition and practitioner assessment.
At Ayurnava, every cupping session begins with an assessment of your specific complaint — chronic muscular pain, stiffness, or a condition your practitioner feels may benefit from improved local circulation — so the cup placement, technique, and duration are tailored rather than generic.
Your practitioner reviews your health history and the area of concern to decide on dry or wet cupping and session length.
The skin is cleaned and lightly oiled where needed; cups and equipment are sterilized before use.
Cups are applied to create suction, typically held or moved for 5–15 minutes depending on the technique and area treated.
Cups are removed and the area is cleaned; mild redness or bruising is normal and explained to you before you leave.
Cupping Therapy is a wellness and supportive-care therapy, complementary to — not a replacement for — medical treatment of diagnosed conditions.
Always consult an Ayurnava practitioner first if you have a diagnosed medical condition, to confirm Cupping Therapy is appropriate and identify any modifications needed.
May need to be avoided or modified for: pregnancy, anemia, bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication, cardiovascular disease, active skin conditions, wounds or sunburn at the treatment site, and fever. Our practitioners review your health history before your first session.
Most people feel a pulling or tight sensation rather than pain. Dry cupping is generally comfortable; any discomfort is usually mild and temporary.
Yes, temporary circular marks or mild bruising are common and considered a normal sign of increased local blood flow. These typically fade within a few days to a week.
Dry cupping uses suction alone. Wet cupping adds controlled micro-incisions before suction, corresponding to the classical Ayurvedic practice of Raktamokshana, and is used selectively based on practitioner assessment.
A single session can ease acute tightness, but practitioners commonly recommend a short course of 3–7 sessions for ongoing muscular or chronic pain concerns.
Cupping isn't recommended during pregnancy, for people with bleeding disorders or on blood-thinning medication, or with certain skin and cardiovascular conditions. Your practitioner will confirm suitability before your first session.
Cupping relates to Raktamokshana, one of Panchakarma's five core detoxification therapies, and is sometimes used alongside other treatments as part of a broader detox plan rather than only as a standalone therapy.
In classical Ayurveda, cupping corresponds to Raktamokshana — bloodletting therapy — one of the five procedures of Panchakarma, traditionally performed using apparatus called Alabu (gourd) and Ghatiyantra (cup-like vacuum devices).
Acharya Sushruta, a foundational figure in Ayurvedic surgery, classified blood as a factor closely tied to disease and described suction-based techniques among the therapeutic approaches used to manage it.
Modern cupping techniques — dry, wet, running, and flash cupping — are contemporary adaptations of these principles, chosen by practitioners based on the specific concern being treated.
